CLIR (hide caller ID) Not Workin
Posted by on 25 January 2012 11:21 AM

Question:

Hi, I have VoIP with iiNet and everything is working fine except that I want to prevent the caller ID on my VOIP line from being displayed when I ring someone.
Under “VoIP / Phone Settings / 1” I have ticked "CLIR (hide caller ID)" however when this is ticked every single call I make gives a busy signal. As soon as I un-tick this I can ring people again.
Please advise.

Diagnosing the cause of the problem

Many ISPs do not support anonymous call due to security concerns. However, some ISP’s for example iiNet do allow you to hide the caller ID at there end. You will need to login into your account at the ISP to enable this function.

To verify if the Hide caller ID is indeed not permitted by the ISP from your router you can capture the VOIP debug logs and check if this is the case. Enable and disable the hide caller ID function, then make a call with each setting.

Below is a sample VOIP log that show that Hide caller ID configured on your router is not permitted by the ISP:

INVITE sip:0422843578@iinetphone.iinet.net.au SIP/2.0

The first two sentences let us know:

1. it’s an outgoing call, because the direction is ‘-->’

2. The call is route through iiNet, because you can see ‘@iinetphone.iinet.net.au’

3. The call is to 0422843578

Now, we know this one is the initial message of our call.

We know the caller id is hidden in this call, the caller is anonymous..

OK, we find the answer. It’s not permitted to make anonymous calls with iiNet VoIP.
