Creating 802.1Q VLANs on Vigor3900 and Planet Smart Switch
Posted by Roy Panetta on 10 June 2015 03:50 PM

In this guide we will configure two IP subnets in a Vigor3900 router and assign each subnet to VLANs on LAN port 2 of the router.  A Planet switch is attached to LAN port 2 on the Vigor3900 router, which will be configured as an 802.1Q VLAN trunk. In the Planet switch, VLANs will be assigned to each switch port.  The diagram below shows the topology being used.

Vigor3900 Configuration

Step1: Create VLANS

Go to “LAN>>Switch” Configuration menu in the Vigor3900 and select the 802.1Q VLAN tab.

Create VLAN 10

VLAN 10 is an existing VLAN. Since we will be using LAN port 2 as the 802.1q VLAN trunk connection to the switch, we will not allow untagged packets to LAN port 2. Select VLAN 10 and deselect LAN port 2 as Untagged.

Create VLAN 101

VLAN 101 will be a new VLAN. Click on Add and enter the VLAN details in the pop up menu.

  1. Enter 101 for VLAN ID.

  2. Select LAN_Port_2 for Member

  3. Select Untag for LAN_Port_2

  4. Click Apply to save

Step2: Configure LANS

Configure LAN 1

Go to “LAN>>General Setup>>General Setup” Configuration menu in the Vigor3900 and select LAN1 and click on Edit.

Enter the required details (IP address, Subnet Mask, DHCP start and end IP address) as shown below:

Configure LAN 2

Go to “LAN>>General Setup>>General Setup” Configuration menu in the Vigor3900 and click on Add to add a new LAN.

For this LAN we enter 192.168.101.1 for the IP address with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and DHCP address range 192.168.101.10 to 192.168.101.110.

Enter the required details (IP address, Subnet Mask, DHCP start and end IP address) as shown below:

The LAN settings should look like this:

Step 3: Enable Routing Between LANS

To allow devices from VLAN 10 to be able to communicate with devices on VLAN 101 you will need to enable routing between the LANs

Go to “LAN>>General Setup>>Inter-LAN Route” Configuration menu in the Vigor3900 and select “Enable Routing Between LANs

Planet Switch Configuration

On the Planet switch we will configure port 1 as the 802.1Q VLAN trunk port.

Step 1

Go to VLAN>>VLAN Port Configuration menu and assign VLAN numbers for each port.

Port 1 is configured as Tagged VLAN under “Link Type” setting.

Testing

Once configuration is completed connect a PC to each VLAN on the switch as shown in the main diagram and verify that the correct DHCP addresses are assigned and devices can ping each other across the VLANs.
